Who Has Your Back?

Ranting can be healthy in moderation. In life as well as in education, their are injustices, problems, and things that are just not right. Once a month TeacherAde shares a rant that addresses some issue that deserves thoughtful consideration. If you would like to share a rant contact me at mjbyrd4@gmail.com

Just for a minute I want to rant about administration that hangs teachers out to dry!

There is few things that get me more angry than when an admin does not defend teachers when they are right.

There are times when teachers are wrong and I understand that position, but in a situation where a teacher is in the right and is not backed by the school, my blood starts to boil.

Here's why:

We, as teachers, rarely have it out for our students. In general there is a method to our madness. We have usually put some careful consideration into our decisions that effect our students. We try to do what is in the best interest of students.

That being said it is not always liked or agreed upon. I hate to see an administration side with parents and students without consulting the teacher. Or even worse, lead the teacher to believe that their decision will be validated, only to change opinions at the last moment.

What angers me the most is what I believe to be the fuel behind these situations. When this kind of thing happens, it seems like the parents usually have some kind of political pull in the community or thick wallets.

Action Point: Administration should always be honest with teachers. They should also make decisions based on the best interest of the student. They should do the right thing no matter what the ramifications of doing the right thing may be.

Can you relate to this? Does your administration have your back?
